Secondary: 6th-8th

:: LEVELS 6th through 8th ::

Begin with the end in mind! As students enter 6th level at Grace, we meet with each student/family to set academic, career, and high school/college goals using data accumulated over their K-5 education. Some examples of high school paths include: The International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Spruce Creek High School, career academies at local or zoned public schools, or other private high schools. The dialog during these conversations drive the customized direction we will plan for each individual student over the next three(3) years.
All our language arts, math, and writing courses align with the best practices prescribed by College Board (AP Central).

LANGUAGE ARTS
Our language arts program continues the focus on rigorous vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and the conventions of writing. As a result, our students score, on average, two grade levels above the national average on vocabulary and the conventions of writing. During the 6-8 level years, students begin to apply these skills by developing their writing skills in the nine (9) patterns of writing: cause and effect, argument, illustration, narration, process analysis, classification, definition, description, and comparison and contrast.

WRITING
The skills of both writing and verbal communication should be cross-curricular. Our students are expect to write a minimum number words in their science, social studies, and language courses. The minimum number of words required vary by level.

In Levels 7 & 8, we have developed a Pre-AP/IB writing survey course. Students who qualify must have corresponding test scores, be self-motivated, and have the maturity to handle high school level content. The instructor is an adjunct who is highly-qualified in Pre-AP/IB writing preparation.

MATHEMATICS
Of all the disciplines, mathematics is the easiest way to customize students learning needs. Students who have the propensity to excel in math are not bound by traditional grade levels or math courses. Our math classes are blocked at the same time for grades 3-8. This allows students to move into the math class that fits their learning need. In 5th grade, students are offered the choice of taking their math course(s) asynchronously by utilizing virtual math courses. This option allows the student to continue math year-round. This path has allowed some students to complete math courses up through Algebra 2 Honors in their tenure at Grace Academy.

We expect students who follow a traditional path to complete Algebra 1 Honors by the end of 8th grade. We employ an array of different resources including traditional math textbooks, FLVS Math Course(s), Khan Academy, and digital technologies to provide students with thepractice and skills necessary to be prepared for or take Geometry Honors and/or Algebra 2 Honors in high school.
